The leading edge of CMU technology is right here in Kingston. Yep, CMUs (concrete masonry unit, which is also known as the common concrete block) that are made from recycled concrete fused with recycled glass powder is the brainchild of the folks at Kingston Block & Masonry Supply LLC. The CMU product, tagged “Possotive,” was awarded a patent last August and is now in production.
Lou Grasso, managing partner at the firm, said the company supplied the CMUs for the new Yankee Stadium, but he said the developer chose another Kingston Block product instead of Possotive. Still, Grasso is hoping folks see the light. He says 30 percent of his business is now in Possotive, and he’s shooting for 100 percent.
Oh, why is this stuff important? Well, Grasso says traditional CMU making releases a lot of CO2. So for each ton of Possotive made one ton of carbon emissions is saved from going into the air. Good stuff, especially when each CMU costs about $2 — which is about the cost of a cup of joe at Starbucks.
